Spending so much time in the car, and not having access to her favorite companion—her thumb—was at times a bit difficult for Sophie.  This was a makeshift solution that worked for a while, and is the closest Sophie has ever come to taking a pacifier. Yes, she put her thumb into the nipple of her bottle and is sucking.  It brought her two levels of familiarity—- the nipple of her bottle that she’s used to sucking, and the ability to control the pacifier the same way she controls her thumb.  It worked until it didn’t.
