Thumb Wars Episode 2 -  Last night Sophie and I spent most of the night bonding in the emergency room.  Sophie’s sucking thumb had a scratch on it earlier in the week, but when I picked her up from Day Care yesterday, it looked swollen and I believe the official health term is “yucky”.
After calling the Nurse Advice line, it was determined that the best course of action would be to have a doctor look at it ASAP to make sure there was no infection.   Sophie was queen of the emergency room last night, which made me feel a little bit like a hypochondriac dad.  She was all smiles and cooing for the nurses and the potential swine flu candidates (okay, so I admit it, I am a hypochondriac dad - when I heard a cough, I did move to the other side of the room).
All in all, the visit took 3-4 hours, start to finish, Sophie’s thumb while inflamed is likely not infected (bacteria culture results should be ready by Saturday - Sunday),  Sophie now has a heavily bandaged thumb (picture below), and a Dora-the-Explorer sticker set.  And Dad, well he learned a little more about how computers/software he consults on for Kaiser are used in real life.   May our family be lucky enough to have all of our emergency room trips be so innocent!
